Martha's Medieval Christmas Evening at the Leon Valley Library Fundraiser

November 30, 2007 by Martha Hannah

If you’re going to raise funds for an important cause like the Leon Valley Public Library’s children’s wing, then this evening was the way to do it. What a night! As the honored guest, I performed my Medieval Comedienne dinner theatre show to a fun loving audience. How rare it is to tell my Medieval mayor joke and there actually be not one, but two mayors in the audience! The present and past mayors of Leon Valley, Texas were there, in addition to several City Council people. This may be a first! In the audience also was a lady who’d just flown in, that day, from Prague in the Czech Republic. Fitting I think, being a Christmas show, since Saint Wenceslas of Medieval Christmas song fame, was an actual king from Bohemia, now the present day Czech Republic. Of course, she had to be there.

Since this also was Leon Valley Public Library’s opening night of the Humanities Texas traveling exhibit, "The Art of Chivalry: European Arms and Armor", and being such a Medieval trivia hound, I wove into my show, the history of Christmas traditions on through the amazing chivalry and pageantry of Henry VIII’s time. Such a display of wealth was used to impress Henry VIII - Imagine being able to hire a goldsmith to fashion gold apples and pomegranates to hang from your horse’s bridle just so you can ride past the king in the heat of a joust.

Everyone was warm and welcoming. The charming Joyce Miller Trent, Library Director and the lovely Friends of the Library ladies made us feel like family and part of the community, as did the audience. So many came up after the show to talk – all very sweet and interesting.

The performance was followed by holiday food, wassail and, my personal favorite, hot mulled wine. Larry and I signed copies of our book, 'The Ghost of Hampton Court'. The Merrie Court Singers, an a cappella Renaissance singing group sang before and after my show, so that all together it made a wonderful Medieval Christmas evening! Thank you, Joyce Miller Trent for including us! This will go down as one of our favorites - an evening made memorable by Leon Valley’s sweet hospitality and love of a good medieval joke!
